Lili Elbe (born as Einar Mogens Wegener) was the first transgender person in the world. In 1930, Einar went to Germany to undergo a series of experimental sex reassignment surgeries. Unfortunately, she died of complications related to the operations.

2. Caroline Tula Cossey

Tula is the first transgender Bond Girl (For Your Eyes Only) and was also a playboy model. Tula was born a female trapped in a male body. She was raised as a male until she began her hormone therapy at 17 and afterwards she started living as a female. In 1974, with the money she earned as a showgirl in Paris, Tula finally had a sex reassignment surgery.

3. Andreja Pejic

Andreja Pejic won both the Hottest Male and Hottest Female model award in the same year. Andreja Pejic turned into an androgynous male model who worked both male and female fashion shows after being scouted as a model just before turning seventeen and whilst working at McDonald’s. In early 2014, Pejic underwent gender reassignment surgery and recently, Andrej changed her name to Andrea.

4. Thomas Beatie

Thomas Beatie is the first male person who gave birth to a child. Thomas Beatie had a gender reassignment surgery in 2002 but kept her “lower lady part” unchanged. In 2007, Thomas underwent an artificial insemination procedure, and became the first pregnant man. Unfortunately, he lost the triplets he was carrying due to an unplanned surgery. However, he didn’t give up and eventually gave birth to a healthy baby girl, the first of three healthy babies.

Janet Mock, The People Magazine’s former staff editor, shocked the world in 2011 when she revealed that she was a transgender woman. Janet became a sex worker at 16 to earn money for her medical transition. At 18, she went to Thailand to get a gender reassignment surgery. Now she is a transgender rights activist.
